“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

We can credit Jack Torrence, Jack Nicholson’s character in the 1980 film The Shining for popularizing this proverb that dates as far back as the mid-1600s.

Americans continue to work more hours than their counterparts in other countries and as we are in the midst of a (finally!) government-acknowledged recession, it does not appear that in the near future that employers will be encouraging more vacation time, personal days, or working in a little “downtime” into our daily work schedule.

No worries some of us say!  Our lives are replete with a variety of great technological tools, by way of the internet, that allow us to never leave our desk to be entertained or “play.”  Social websites such as Facebook or MySpace offer an almost endless selection of “applications” for distraction from our stressful workday.  Yahoo! Games continues to offer games-arcade games, card games, board games, puzzle games…the list goes on and on.   Video sharing sites such as YouTube continue to bring us many laughs at the office with their quirky or sometimes scandulous videos.

Where am I going with this?  What do you do when these entertainment or play options are no longer allowed in the workplace?  I don’t see Mark from accounting carrying a Yahtzee game to the lunchroom for a quick roll of the dice or Marie challenging you to a game of paper football at her desk.

  • What to you do to “relieve stress” during your workday via the internet?
  • Do you only access these sites at work or at home as well?
  • What is your opinion as to how this effects your productivity?

Obama Places Ads In EA Video Games

Politics, there’s hardly any other word that can make me sigh more than it. Radio, television, internet; these are all places where politics rears its ugly head and it’s something I get tired of fairly quickly. At least from the mainstream aspect of things.

When I pick up a video game controller, I can be secure in knowing that it’s one place I’ll be safe from political advertising. Or is it? It has been reported that Obama has launched an ad campaign that will see his ads plastered over a slew of EA titles. The most notable is in Burnout Paradise, where Obama’s ad/face will be featured on many of the billboards in the virtual city. This makes me sad personally because I really like Burnout: Paradise, and I don’t want political advertising making its presence known there.

I’ve been against a lot of in-game advertising since its conception. I know some will say it adds to ‘immersiveness’ of the games, but do we really play video games to feel more in the real world? I know that when I put a game disc into my system, I’m doing it to become part of something outside the conventions of the real world. In Burnout: Paradise for example, it’s all about driving cars really fast and in some instances pulling off crazy aerial stunts. So when I’m doing 3 aerial flips with my Ferrari looking sports car, do I really want to see Obama’s face and be reminded of what’s happening in the real world?

In game advertising before this latest example was all about selling products. Now its shifted to getting a political message out to the masses. And I’m not talking about in-game politics, but real life politics. Which to me, there’s nothing more sad and depressing than the current political system.

So, I’ve expressed my general feelings towards Obama’s political advertising. Now where does my frustration and anger need to be directed at? Should I completely blame Obama for wanting to get his message out to gamers? Even though he’s mentioned before that people need to get off their couches and stop playing games. Or is it EA who’s profiting off Obama’s big dollars and they’re the ones to blame?

The truth of the matter is that the problem even goes beyond Obama and EA. But to encompass the overlying problems would require more than just one blog post, so let’s keep the focus just on these two. In this situation both are sharing my anger and frustration equally. My main anger towards Obama is the statements he’s made about video gaming in the past, yet he doesn’t mind trying to score some votes through its advertising. EA gets the brunt of my anger because even though Obama paid for the adspace, there had to be someone else out there that was willing to pay equal to what he was offering. Specifically companies without a political agenda.

People who aren’t into video games will probably say I’m over dramatizing the situation. As a gamer who’s been going strong for about 20+ years, I think I have a cause for anger, and concern. Like I mentioned earlier, video games are one of my great escapes from political agendas, and ideas, and basically everything that sucks about the real world (I’ve overused it haven’t I?). So when a media platform that I love and enjoy starts to adopt this kind of advertising, I can’t rightfully sit by and not voice concern.

Ok, I think I’ve went on a political rant long enough. For those who think I’m trying to pick on Obama please know that if this were McCain I would be writing the same article with a different name at the beginning.

The “ Use a Letter, Share a Blogging Tip “ Game

Well, it’s time for some play here at Work N Play. I have been trying to come up with games every once in a while but at times my mind just seems to shut when it comes to coming up with something creative. Well, I try!

I am not sure how this game will come across but just bare with me as I tried. When I was setting my 2008 blogging goals, one thing I had in mind was to help out other bloggers while learning from them. Well, that’s exactly what we will try and do in this game. Whether we have 10 readers or 50,000 we have all gained knowledge about blogging in some way or the other. And we all have something that might be valuable for somebody else.

How The Heck Do We Play “Use a Letter, Share a Blogging Tip” Game?

Sounds cool huh! Anyways, here are the details on how this game will be played.

  • Each commenter will pick one letter and make a sentence out of it which will be related to blogging.
  • The letters will go in order. For example, A,B,C and so on …..
  • I will start a sentence with the letter “A” and the next commenter will start a sentence with “B”, next commenter with “C” and we keep going, hopefully till we hit “Z”
  • Each commenter can comment more than once or use more than one letter but will have to use a separate comment for each letter and sentence. Example, if a commenter wants to make a sentence with D and E these two have to be separate comments. Each comment box can be used for one letter and a sentence.

    Challenging Your Blog IQ

The domain name is worknplay.net and I almost find myself working everyday. I haven’t taken anytime for play at all and it’s long over due. So I just decided to start a fun game Challenging Your Blog IQ through this post. Well, I will talk a little more about the game below but first a quick note to remind you that for a couple weeks worknplay will be featuring interviews from some key bloggers. You can read and gain some insight on how they started and what they did to make themselves and their blog successful. I am not sure what day of the week the interviews will be published each week. So to stay current you can subscribe to this blog using the menu on the sidebar or simply visit everyday ( subscribing would be easier I think ;-)

Back to the play we are going to be playing. It’s a simple game that I call Challenging Your Blog IQ. This game will test your knowledge on whether or not you know these popular blogs. Here are the details on how the game will be played

    1) I will list one blog with words scrambled up.
    2) The first commenter will unscramble the word and find out what blog it is.
    3) Then the commenter will create his own scrambled word for another popular blog and the next commenter will unscramble and get it right and the game keeps going until, well, whenever.

    Here is an example

I will leave one blog as a scrambled word, say ” lapwrkony.net ”
Commenter will unscramble it and get it right and make his own unscrambled word ( has to be a blog, well known ) in the following format,

    Correct answer: Worknplay.net
    My word: “rolpgergbo.net”

and the next commenter will go ahead and unscramble and find out what blog it is, and leave one for the next commenter who might be interested in playing the game

You can choose the blog only from the top 100 technorati blogs. This makes it a little easier to find the answers and make up your scrambled words.

Ohh, by the way, although it is just a game for fun, I would like to quick add that 10 random commenters who get the answers right will be featured on my blogroll. This blog is predicted to be a strong PR 5 next update, so it might be worth something to get a link.

But most of all let’s all have fun. Enjoy Work N Play and unscramble the Blogs :-)

    Its Playtime!

Usually I try to find websites and services that are productive but once in a while a little playtime is much needed as well. Today I am writing about a website that offers a free racing game, and no its not one of those crappy ones either.

Ijji, publisher of Drift City, an online racing game seems to have it done right when it comes to an online racing game. Before I carry on I should make known that this game is free. If you are a fan of Grand Theft Auto then you will love this game, although this game is not as vast or as advanced as GTF, obviously.

This free online racing game lets you drive your car freely aound the Mittron island and you can engage in little missions and other users who are playing this game from around the globe. The only hitch I found, it was long and tedious to get the game to start as you have to download a couple of things, but once I got to playing this game, I had no complains.

    Screenshots

The graphics on this game seems a little childish but still has a reality feel to it. Controlling your fast car is very easy and for learning how to play this game, there is nothing to learn, just know about the six keys you control your car with and you are ready for some action. For online gamers and racecar fans this is an ultimate fun website.

So go ahead and get your gears ready and drive around Drift City.
