With the rise of social media and social networking sites, it has become of utmost importance to get out there and participate in order to be known and heard. Reading blogs and online sites can boost your knowledge in terms of what’s out there, but sometimes traditional methods of gaining knowledge can be very valuable as well. I subscribe to a lot of magazines besides reading blogs and articles online which has cerainly helped me gather knowledge and information regarding new services and sites. I subscribe to a magazine called ” website magazine ” which has been a very valuable source of information for me in every aspect of my online life.

I recently got my hands on the November issue and it had a list of social sites which inspired me to compile them here in this post from the magazine and some from my favorites folder. So here it is, an exhaustive list of social sites for you to try your hands on and network and promote every aspect of your online life while meeting new people. And who said the list always has to be in increments of 10? We will end this one on 56. Enjoy! [Read more →]

Commenter’s Post - Is Google Monopolizing The Internet?

Well, I have nothing to write as I just wanted to quick get opinion from my readers and visitors on something that I have been battling to find an answer. This is your post so write as you feel and discuss with other’s via comments.

I constantly find two groups one “for” and the other “against”. Some say if google is becoming a monopolistic figure it’s a good thing because they provide services which are great. The other group argues that monopoly in any form is not good.

So what do you think?

Is Web Over Commercialized?

Most of the time when I watch TV, I am not sure if I am watching commerical between the show or watching the show in between commercials. Lately, with the web being commercialized to the same extent I wouldn’t think twice in comparing ad filled websites with TV shows. Pop - ups, pop - unders, flash animations, ” Wait don’t leave yet ” messages; surfing the web with all these advertisements has become a major annoyance, atleast for me.

All the different forms of advertising from banner ads to text links filled blogs has become a turn off for many web users including myself. My blog is no exception as you can see the ads on the sidebar, every body is trying to make money, why not me, right? ;-) My point is all these advertisement drives your focus away from the content or service provided by a website which in turn hampers your surfing. If I visit a blog to read a content, that’s exactly what I want to do, not find ads in between the post. Take for example, John Chow.com. I visit this blog regularly and find it entertaining but posts filled with ads sometimes become an annyoance and drives your focus away from the content itself. [Read more →]

Google Pagerank - It’s a Class System

The recent pagerank update compelled me to write this article. I am not going to write about whose PR went down and whose went up cause honestly I dont really care ;-). This does not imply that I myself don’t want a pagerank for my blog. As a matter of fact, its become more of a need than want. To be honest I have never liked the Pagerank system that google introduced a couple years ago. It defeats the purpose of maintaining the quality and integrity of a site as many of us solely build blogs and sites to gain that PR right away( popularity helps in quickly monetizing a website or a blog if you are serving advertisement ), ignoring the important fact such as content and other related things that makes a site worthy of anybody’s time.

So, what do I really mean by the the topic ” Google Pagerank - It’s a Class System “? Well, in the real world, society has been divided into two groups, upper class and lower class. Individuals with money are ranked at the top and middle and lower class are ranked at the bottom, this is the Societal rank we have all been categorized into in the real world. I find this very similar with websites and blogs now with google’s Pagerank system. A website that has a high PR is ranked on top and new websites that come out and are struggling take forever to gain that status. I just feel there is no need for this differentiation as I don’t see the purpose. [Read more →]

LOL - Laugh Out Loud

Here’s a secret, sometimes a way to find sites is to just type it in on the search box and see what it comes up with. I tried it and here is the result. Sitting on my computer trying to find a new site or service I thought about a chat “slang”- LOL and there it was, a site - http://www.lol.com/

This site does exactly as the name suggests, Makes you LOL ( Laugh Out Loud ), well most of the time. It contains jokes of all kinds, funny as well as the one’s that you might find scratching your head to understand what it really means.

I found the site to be pretty fun as it had something to keep me clicking the ” Tell me another ” button. Also if you wanna check out the development of this site you can check out their blog. The site’s layout might be a bit of a turn off since its simple but like the saying goes ” Don’t judge a book by its cover ” this site can provide you with hours of laughter when you are feeling down, so go ahead and LOL!

A quick note:At Work N Play, every commenter from the previous post will get a chance to get a link to one of their articles from their blog if they have one. Chinswing – Web Forum with voice instead of text

Have you ever felt the need to participate in a web forum without having the need to type? Wouldn’t it be nice to share your feelings and opinions using your voice instead of fingers on a web forum?

Chinswing, a service which lets you share and participate in a discussion does exactly that. You can use voice messages to participate in an ongoing topic, ask for suggestions, start a new discussion and all this will be done using voice messages instead of text postings. I know, relief to the sore fingers.

Some of the features that I liked about this service is being able to use your voice instead of your fingers, ofcourse, and the fact that everything is divided into categories so you can pick a particular category and start participating.

Cool service, by the way, I love those little green monster, gobblin images on the front page.
