Commenter’s Post - Is Google Monopolizing The Internet?

Well, I have nothing to write as I just wanted to quick get opinion from my readers and visitors on something that I have been battling to find an answer. This is your post so write as you feel and discuss with other’s via comments.

I constantly find two groups one “for” and the other “against”. Some say if google is becoming a monopolistic figure it’s a good thing because they provide services which are great. The other group argues that monopoly in any form is not good.

So what do you think?

  1. I could say that Google, MSN and Yahoo are competitiors so it isnt really a monopoly.
Another competitive move is the gPC!

But they do set a different standard on the web… when it comes to the Page Rank. They r not bias towards PayPerPost sites, I think they’re balancing out to divide the community into 2 specific income types which is PPP with PR0 & Adsense with normal PR’s.

Instead of monopoly, how about jack of all trades… or trend setter for the future! Remember Lycos? hehe

  2. Hi Ritu,

I have no problem with Google. I accept the fact that we do need Google to make money on the Internet. Am I happy about some of their “stunts”? No

I certainly don’t agree with whatever they do, but since they have the monopoly (so I guess that answers your question) they can do whatever they want.

They rule the Internet, it is a fact!

I for one, never use any other search engine than Google. I don’t fret about things, I just get on with my journey.

    Hope this helps :-)

  3. for now, i think the google situation is perfectly fine. but too much of anything isn’t good, eh? i get an odd feeling that google is now trying to acquire so much internet real estate (youtube, facebook on the horizon?)

  4. Ritu, yes Google is slowly becoming a monopoly. Since they win by providing great services so I’ve nothing against them. The recent pagerank punishment was kinda uncalled for, but then again, who is perfect?

    Give them a chance.

    Cheers,
    Ellesse

  5. Yes it is, all of the criticism against Microsoft should now be re-focused on Google.
Monopolies are not a good thing.

  6. There are alot of similarities with the difference being that Google isn’t charging an arm and a leg for most of their services. They aren’t trying to force people with paid upgrades to buggy software.

The only problem I see is that we are becoming more, and more reliant upon Google. When Google decides that they want to fully monetize, and start charging is when I’ll have a problem with them. For now I’m blindy following like the rest of the herd.

  7. Since whatever from Google is free, I don’t mind the monopoly. But the recent Google Slap on PR, which affected a lot of blogs, is really a scare of what Google is capable of doing.

  8. Thanx for sharing your views guys. I will be discuss more about this and my view on a separate post sometimes next week.
    Meanwhile keep em’ coming

  9. Personally I’ve no issue with Google. They provide a lot of great free services, such as their search and analytics, and some excellent paid-for services - I believe Google PPC is better than any other PPC service.

They do have an inordinate amount of power, but that will not last ad infinitum. Someone, somewhere will challenge them, or the internet will change in such a way that their search become largely irrelevant. 20 years ago no-one could have forseen the rise of the blog to challange the newspaper, or the rise of Linux.

Things are always in flux, the internet even more so, it’s just a matter of the next big thing.

  10. The fact that Google’s services are free is irrelevant. That’s just the sedative to keep everyone complacent as they take over control of information, and it’s accessibility.

The Page Rank slap is plain and simple. It was intended to tell publishers, you want traffic from us, you advertise with us.

I’m a bit horrified by the lack of concern by my fellow commentators. Do people not understand the consequences of one entity controlling the flow of all information on the internet?

  11. “The Page Rank slap is plain and simple. It was intended to tell publishers, you want traffic from us, you advertise with us.”

No the page rank slap was in response to people trying to game the system by purposely using follow instead of no follow for paid links. Google has no problem with paid links as long as it is no follow. PPP or TLA methods of selling links was in violation of Google’s TOS. People selling links on their pages that pass page rank is a violation of their TOS. They have no qualms if you sell links on your pages, just put that no follow tag on.

  12. yes Google is trying to monoplize everything and he’s even kicking his competitors using PR.
I talked about the same issue in my blog. here

  13. I’m bored of those websites trying to monopolize the web (Wikipedia , Yahoo,Google,Youtube) i want a website that has a personality , something special about it.Do you know what i mean ? tell me which websites you think are the most interesting .

Comments Are Always Welcome!
