Is Web Over Commercialized?

Hi! It seems you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! Feel free to leave comments on posts!

Most of the time when I watch TV, I am not sure if I am watching commerical between the show or watching the show in between commercials. Lately, with the web being commercialized to the same extent I wouldn’t think twice in comparing ad filled websites with TV shows. Pop - ups, pop - unders, flash animations, ” Wait don’t leave yet ” messages; surfing the web with all these advertisements has become a major annoyance, atleast for me.

All the different forms of advertising from banner ads to text links filled blogs has become a turn off for many web users including myself. My blog is no exception as you can see the ads on the sidebar, every body is trying to make money, why not me, right? ;-) My point is all these advertisement drives your focus away from the content or service provided by a website which in turn hampers your surfing. If I visit a blog to read a content, that’s exactly what I want to do, not find ads in between the post. Take for example, John Chow.com. I visit this blog regularly and find it entertaining but posts filled with ads sometimes become an annyoance and drives your focus away from the content itself.

Remember, when the web first came in existance? It offered so much more insight into things, so useful for education and entertainment. But much like TV, the web has degraded to the lowest common denominator and honestly, I don’t think we will be able to get it back the way it was couple years ago. Popular sites like MySpace and Yahoo are filled with advertisements overly commercialized. Half the time I am not even sure what MySpace is all about, is it a social networking site for individuals like us or is it a marketer’s heaven, I am not sure.

I am not saying we shouldn’t use web as a medium to earn money. It has become one of the most effective ways to get to your targeted customers, but does it really have to be at such a high extent? I would like to earn money from my blog and get some requests from advertisers to put their banners up on the sidebar, but this blog will never be overly commercialized. Content should be first, drive visitors to your content and service first and money will follow along. So what do you think? Is the web over commercialized?

By the way, I do have 4 spots available for banner advertising ;-)

Yes I remembered when I downloaded my first um.. image.

Internet has become or will become the worlds biggest trade center. Like in real life property runs out of space, and likewise advertising space becomes limited so we start seeing advertisements all over the place. More, and more advertisers will compete or find new places to put up ads. So what happens? People put more, and more ads on their pages since the offers are there.

  2. Well said Mitch. This is what is exactly happening on the internet. Demand is growing and with it people are finding ways to supply.

  3. agreed with johnchow.com. I visit there every once in a while, but the number of ads is just overwhelming. pretty annoying at times. hopefully, my site never gets that filled with advertisements . . . then again, john chow is a very rich man with those ads, so i dunno. i guess its not a big suprise that everything comes down to being all about the money.

  4. I agree with you that i do not like overly commercialized sites.

    Stumbled!

  5. Yeah, it seems like it does come down to money!

  6. i started using the web in the early 1990’s and i remember when the only ads were on Yahoo and NO websites had ads..then the banner ads started, then the pop ups, then the pop unders, then the irritating, flashing, bouncing, dancing, jiggling, screaming like a banshee buzzing bandwidth sucking garbage that ad men deemed vital for me to interact with…They act like their stupid ads are SO much more important than the content…Did I come to a website to read your ads? No. Do I care about what you are selling? No. And it just got worse and worse…Same with commercial TV,which I no longer watch since it’s more ads now that program.
I now use AdBblock because I’m just sick of the ads. Google’s plane text ads i don’t mind,it’s the other stuff i will no longer tolerate.
Advertisers moan and sob about Ad Block, but they
have abused the public for years by being as annoying and pushy as possible and people are fighting back. Ad Block is a great way of letting them know that we are not going to take their cluttered, gaudy ad garbage being vomited into our eyes 24/7 any longer.
Ad mongers never cared how much they annoyed me,so why should I care how they feel about me blocking their irritating gibberish?
What they don’t understand is,at least for me,the more you irritate me,the more likely I will NOT respond to your ad…So even without adblock,I would NEVER click on a banner,or any other ad..
And if you are especially obnoxious,I will remember you and make a point that if I see your product in a shop,I won’t buy it.
Meanwhile,I’ll use Ad Block and you know where you can put your brainless advertisements.

  7. Point well made. I just read a post on another blog where the author said she would no longer read posts from other blogs that has SNAP, as she found it to be annoying and blocking the words she came to read. She, also, said she was tired of blogs that had more ads than articles or that had so many it interfered with her ability to find, never mind, read the content.

I agree. Some ads are fine, but so many blogs and websites look like they were put up just to house advertisements, it does get very annoying.

  8. Demian I have to agree that Snap thing really annoys me. I mean its nice the first time around to look at a website before you click on it. However when blogs use it and you are just mousing over to go click on something it pops up and gets REALLY annoying.

On a page with not many links or a link directory that doesn’t have a thumbnail script its alright. Just not for every single site.

  9. Ahh, you guys bring such good points in view.

I agree with snapshot being sort of in the way. It was fun at first but after a while it gets kind of annoying.

  10. maybe its a little over commercialized but its not too bad, the thing is.. because servers cost so much and because it costs so much to bring good traffic to your site this is why people need to put banners on there site to earn money

  11. @ jason - valid point
