Traffic - It Takes Time

We all know how hard it is to get traffic when you first start a blog or any website. There are some things most of us fail to realize while we wait for that suddent rush of traffic - it takes time! Work N Play is my third blog and my 2 other blogs have been dead for almost a year ( R.I.P ), the sad part is those two blogs didn’t last even 2 months before I burned them to death. Why? I wasn’t getting enough traffic, was it a good enough reason to let those two babies die so early? I dont think so.

All the blogs that we regularly visit weren’t as popular as they are now at some point in time, they had to work and wait patiently for that to happen. Everything takes time, growing from a toddler to adulthood, growing from a seed to a plant and it is no different when it comes to blog or any other site for that matter.

You need to fall so you can learn to get up

I take the quote above as a matra in life. Yes, we do things and at times we fall hard. Think about a baby, if a baby gave up trying to get up and walk again after the 100th fall, well, he would never walk again. Now think about your blog, isn’t it similar. You brought that blog or website into the vast world of internet and now you can’t expect it to run right away. Give it some time, let it fall a couple of times, I can assure you it will get up and walk and slowly start running before you even realize.

The only thing is, you are the father, owner, creator, whatever you want to call yourself of that baby. Its your job to nourish, cherish and hold that baby’s hand so it can walk, run and talk for you. And before you know it, the blog that you worked so hard to raise and help get out there might as well give you an early retirement :-)

Take it easy, Give it some time!

  1. This is one of the biggest problems people have, they create a site and expect all of this traffic to just come out of no where. Once they do not see this happening, they close up shop and call it a failure before it really had a true chance to succeed.

  2. I learned it the hard way too, better late than never though

  3. It’s been 4 months I treat my blog “like a baby”
I get inspired by Chris Blog at:

    http://mattnutts.com/2007/10/21/treat-your-blog-like-a-baby-though-to-adult-hood/

LOL! that’s a hard work for true!

  4. I agree Kukuh, it definitely is hard work and lots of patience. It is kinda depressing when you open your stats everyday just to find that there were 5 visitors the previous day, but like I said in the post, you just gotta wait.

Also the post that you linked here is a wonderful read and I am glad that you posted it.

  5. I know the feeling very well. I used to have a blog some 4 years ago, that didn’t really get anywhere. That was a personal blog though, and I still have one on myspace that I save just for my friends. Its one of those blogs that was meant to not care who reads it.

Now though I have a blog that I actually want to try to promote. I’m having the hardest of times at the moment, but I’m rather enjoying the experience. Each day if I see my subscriber count go up, or I get a returning visitor I give myself a pat on the back. Every little reader just gives me the energy to make 1 more post.

  6. Good advice and an important reminder that we need to be patient with our blogs.

  7. First off, just wanted to say that I like your blog theme and layout. Pretty sweet.

Second, its nice reading that others share the same problems in having a “dead” blog when they first start it. Can be pretty demoralizing to check your google analytics and see only 10 visitors.

Hopefully we can all learn from each other and promote our blogs to respectable levels of visitors.

  8. Ritu’s been doing a good job, and even doing pretty good promotions for his place. It makes me want to step it up a little, but that’s after my vacation. Mexico first, then more blogage.

Speaking of themes where are you hosting this place at? I need to look into switching to wordpress someday. Was it pretty easy to do?

  9. Thanx Mitch!:-) Have fun in Mexico, where are you going in Mexico anyway?

I am hosting this at MediaTemple. You can see the banner on my sidebar. Also switching to Wrodpress wasn’t that bad and I had a lot of help as well. I am loving WP.

  10. I’m heading to Cozumel? I think. Yea, my friend made the reservations so I got the itinerary a few days ago. Atleast I had a passport ready to go =P. Would have been nice to know I was going to leave the country you know?

Maybe once I get back from my trip I’ll bug you again about the blog setup or you can point me in the right directions for setting it up.
