Trial And Error - Learn From Your Mistakes

Hi! It seems you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! Feel free to leave comments on posts!

One of the most effective ways to learn is from your mistakes. This holds true for your blog as well, as we are constantly trying to gain popularity for our blogs in the blogosphere. Since the launch of this blog in August I myself have made quite a few mistakes which when I look back, at times are embarassing. But this is how we learn, from our mistakes.

The first mistake that I encountered was not researching enough on what platform I wanted my blog on. I started this blog on Blogger which is one of the easiest way to start a blog. But again Bloggers’ limited functionality will hurt your blog if you plan to expand it further and are as serious with your blog as I am. If you start on one platform and later decide to change it, one thing that you are going to see hurting your blog is ” you will lose your readers “. While I was switching my blog to Wordpress from Blogger and getting the layout ready I stopped updating for more than a week, the result, I lost almost 30 RSS readers that had subscribed to my feeds.

Also as we value PageRank so much in determining the value and quality of a blog, you can be hit by this as well while you make a switch. If your blog had a PageRank in Blogger and then you decide to switch over to other platform, you are going to lose this recognition to your blog which might hurt your reputation ( not that I care much for PageRank ).

Another thing that time after time I try to mention is please do not spam the comment section on other blogs. Again its a trial and error, you do wrong and next time you find out how to do it right. Once you spam a comment section on a popular blog you will be seen as a spammer by the blogger and all other commenters as well. Think of it this way, if one of the popular blog has a post that has 90 comments and you go in there and spam the comments section, you are now seen as a spammer by the blogger and all 90 commenters as well. You just lost 91 people that could have visited your blog.

It’s the quality that matters more than quantity. Although, quantity should be a priority as well, it should be placed behind quality. Write good content, something that will make your readers come back. When I first started this blog, I had almost 45-50 posts within a month, now I sit back and relax and write only when I have something to say. If you don’t have anything to say, don’t say it.

Participating in discussion forums and boards are a sure fire way to gain recognition but again do this in a positive way. When I started I used to post frequent threads on forums and discussion boards without any relativity which has now certainly hurt me in one way or the other. Again, if you have nothing to say don’t say it.

Make mistakes. We are all humans after all and we all make mistakes. The wise thing to do is to learn from them and make the right decision. My matra in life is ” We need to fall so we can learn to get up “. So there is nothing wrong with making mistakes as long as you dont repeat them. Mistakes can be one of the best way to gain success if you analyze and see what you did wrong at first. Trial and Error is the best way to learn, I tried some ways and made mistakes and now I am ready to correct them.

  1. You bring up some good points in this article. Thanks for listing your mistakes, so that others may learn from it!

One mistake that I made when I first started blogging was that I didn’t have a focus for my blog. I was writing purely for the entertainment of my friends. This prevented me from expanding my audience as my posts were erratic. I would write about sports one day, and then washing my car the next day. Not a good strategy!

  2. To true! Changing your url isn’t a great thing but it’s something that has to be done sooner rather than later if you are on a blogger account.

  3. […] some pretty egregious errors when it comes to blogging and setting up my blog. I was inspired by a post I read yesterday wherein the author discussed the many mistakes committed so far in his blogging career. […]

  4. Probably my biggest mistake was forgetting at a certain point to review other blogs. I was growing while I was doing that and then I just stopped for some reason. So I am going to start doing it again. And I’m going to offer to do it for anyone who feels like they might need a review and some comments.

  5. I honestly believe that it is nonsense to say that we learn from our mistakes. We cannot learn from mistakes, we can only learn from successes. Mistakes do not show us the right answer, they can only show us wrong answers.
